TĀLĀ introduces her approach to sampling, and how she samples her own vocals and instruments to create a sample in three ways. She also covers overcoming writer’s block and how to be more creative in the studio.
TĀLĀ creates original samples using built-in Logic plugins and demonstrates how to flip them in various ways. She starts with a pad / chord and delves into EQ and its intuitive use. Adding a Logic bass channel with the ES1, she plays with the cut-off and does light mixing using distortion, saturation techniques, panning and third-party plugins to sculpt her idea. She records vocals and integrates them into the project, adding a flanger and reverb for effect. Finally, she arranges the idea before manipulating it further.
TĀLĀ adds a loop mix VST for extra effects and manipulates audio samples by experimenting with filter and pitch settings. This allows for techniques such as chopping up the samples, pitching them up and down for different dynamics, and adding shakers recorded on a phone microphone for added percussion. She mixes these elements with built-in Logic plugins and the RC20 for a vintage sound, and adds extra vocal snippets with pitch manipulation for variation.
In the final chapter, TĀLĀ changes the tempo to taste, shifts up and down the octaves on the newly created sample, and adds the Fab Filter Pro-Q3 for extra filtering outcomes. She then uses automation to carve in pitch changes, speed, and integrates layering for depth and feel.
Born in Hampton to an Iranian father and English mother, TĀLĀ’s heritage meant she was immersed in a variety of sounds from a young age, from Googosh and Michael Ball to Garage, RnB and Hip-Hop. After the Aesop label release ‘The Duchess’ EP, TĀLĀ signed with Columbia and released three more EPs, including the experimental ‘Malika’ which found her traveling to collaborate with artists from Egypt, Turkey South Korea and the US. Her collaboration with BANKS on the track ‘Wolfpack’ began TĀLĀ’s transition into electronic producer and RnB songwriter, and she has since sold out headline shows at The Courtyard and The ICA, remixing for the likes of Katy Perry and Petite Noir.
